Colonel Giovanni Truglio (Italian Carabinieri) was born in Sant’Agata
d’Esaro (CS), on the 25th of November 1959. He followed the Italian Army Academy
in Modena (1977-1979) and Carabinieri Officers’ school in Rome (1979-1981).
From 1981 to 1986 he was initially assigned as platoon leader and after as company
commander to the NCO Training School in Florence. From 1986 till 1989 he was appointed
in Trieste as territorial Company Commander. From 1989 to 1995 he served in the
Parachutist Battalion “Tuscania” in Livorno as staff officer and from
1995 to 1997 he was staff officer at Carabinieri HQ – Operational Branch –
in Rome. From 1997 up to 2001 was appointed as commander of the Operational Group
“Calabria”, whilst from 2001 to 2002 he was in Rome as commander of
the 8th battalion “Lazio” and from 2002 to 2003 he served as Chief of
the Operational Centre of the Carabinieri HQ. From 2003 to 2004 he attended, in
Rome, the High Formation Course at the Italian Joint Police Forces School. In 2006
and 2007 he was the Director of the Institute for professional, juridical and military
studies in the Carabinieri Officers’ School in Rome.
He participated in several missions abroad: UNISOM in Somalia (1993) and ALBA in
Albania (1997); he was Commander of the Multinational Specialized Unit (MSU) in
Bosnia Herzegovina in the SFOR mission from September 2004 and then the first commander
of the Integrated Police Unit (IPU) regiment in EU Operation “Althea”
from December 2004 till September 2005. Finally, during 2006 he was Commander of
the Multinational Specialized Unit Regiment in the Italian Joint Task Force in Iraq.
He has been awarded with:
- Silver Medal for Army Valor;
- Silver Cross for 16 years of Duty;
- Long Command Period Bronze Medal;
- Bronze Medal Cross for 10 years of Parachuting;
- Slovenian Gold Medal for Cooperation and Friendship;
- Hungarian Gold Medal for Meritorious Service.
He has a degree in Political Science and a degree in Security Science
Appointed by the High Level Interdepartmental Committee (CIMIN), Colonel Truglio
became the second Commander of the European Gendarmerie Force on June, 26, 2007,
and will cover this position until 2009
